From what I’ve heard, these are much more expensive to maintain than a Honda

I know someone who had a Ducati , there’s a reason he no longer has a Ducati.

so he sold his horrendously unreliable bike for an even more unreliable bike. smart

We’ll see, the Ducati was pretty bad. I sent this to him, so maybe he’ll respond.

Buy a Honda instead and save yourself the headache and wallet pain.

Isn’t this called Ducati’s malaise era?
But maybe good as a display in a garage or something.

Worth it to park in your garage and stare at it. Not worth it for actual riding.
If you must have a Ducati, a quick look on Cycletrader shows leftover ‘17 Monsters starting at $7k and Supersports at $11k. Either one will be a bazillion times better in riding, as well as reliability and maintenance costs.

Valve intervals were the main reason for selling the Monster 796. 7,500 mile valve inspections/adjustments @ ~$1000 for that service. The A
prilia surprisingly
is cheaper for valve service ~$800, plus it’s done every 12,000 miles.
My Ducati woes were from a mis-placed O2 sensor after I had an aftermarket exhaust changed out, and a stock exhaust placed in. 1 out of the 4 dealers I took it to finally fixed it. So while it was a PITA in that instance, it was a pretty good bike. Really capable in the canyons/etc.

The ST2 is a fine bike, not great, not awful, just fine. It sounds like a Ducati (some-feel-annoying dry-clutch rattle and all) , it requires Ducati-like service intervals, and the parts are expensive (though to be fair, if you maintain it appropriately it’s not un -reliable. The ST2's engine has a quite mild and mid-range- y tune and is not very high-strung )
W hat it isn’t is:
1) The best sport- tourer you could buy at the time
2) The worst sport- tourer you could buy at the time
3) A wolf in sheep’ s clothing
4) A completely sorted rock-solid reliable Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki
5) Particularly more exciting than a Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki/BMW
6) A good deal when new. (B ut with the depreciation it’s now arguable...)

If that’s what you can afford all in then you probably can’t afford the maintenance. Not to be insulting or anything, just would hate to see someone get into a tough spot.

14 and newer monsters have doubled that valve interval. Just FYI. How are you liking the Aprilia so far? Did you take it out over the holiday weekend?

Oh nice. I remember hearing something about newer Ducs being better. Aprilia is great so far, it did really well at Buttonwillow yesterday, I got a 2:24 quickest lap which is pretty ok considering I’ve only done 1 other track day at a different track (streets of willow). Bike handles great too, the Q3+ tires I had on it were super sticky as well!
